Abstract

In English

What shall we say, in Catalan: ‘dret a decidir' or 'dret de decidir'? 'Amor a algú', 'per algú', 'envers algú' or 'cap a algú'? As we can see, the same noun or nouns that appear to be similar can have complements introduced by different prepositions. Do these formal differences correspond to semantic differences? Although the study of argument structure in the nominal domain has been partially studied in contemporary Catalan, what was it like in old Catalan? This paper shows a firs approximation to the study of nominal complements in old Catalan from a descriptive perspective, based on the analysis of all the occurrences of 45 nouns that appear on the CICA (Corpus Informatitzat del Catala Antic).
