Ziel des Artikels war es, die wichtigsten historischen Informationen über das Hydronym Elbe und weitere von dieser Wurzel gebildete Hydronyme zusammen zu tragen, deren Struktur vom Standpunkt der Wortbildung zu diskutieren und die bestehenden etymologischen Erklärungen auch in Hinblick auf die semantische Typologie zu untersuchen. Zwei Lösungen erweisen sich schließlich als wahrscheinlicher als die anderen: die 'weiße' Etymologie, die bereits Hans Krahe vorgelegt hatte, und die 'langsame', deren Urheber letztlich Wolfgang P. Schmid gewesen ist.

The purpose of the presented article was to summarize the most important historical information about the hydronym Albis / Elbe / Labe and hydronyms formed from the same root, to discuss problems of their word formation and finally to evaluate various etymological attempts with respect to semantic typology. Two solutions seem to be more satisfactory than others: "white" etymology proposed by Hans Krahe and "slowly-streaming" etymology of Wolfgang Schmid.
