TY - JOUR ID - 1321939 AU - Beresnevičiúte Nosalova, Halina PY - 2015 TI - Czech National Culture in Mid-Nineteenth-Century Brno: The Efforts of Several Individuals or a Fashion among Established Elites? PB - Wallstein Verlag CY - Göttingen SN - 9783835317727 KW - nineteenth-century Brno KW - elites KW - Czech national culture KW - social careers of the artists N2 - The land patriotic sentiments among the town public and established elites lent Czech cultural events in mid-nineteenth-century Brno more support and popularity than historiography is accustomed to acknowledge. Czech national activists made good use of the influential public discourse, which supported the reputations of those who toiled to bring values of culture and civilisation to their homeland. The patriotic discourse was promoted by the elites of the old regime, but also the newly emerging elites participated in it. Josef Dworzak and Pavel Křižkovský also won the sympathies of influential German liberal circles. Those outstanding participants and organisers of Czech national cultural events managed to draw popularity and publicity. Their important social connections protected their strivings against open animosity deep into nationalist era. ER -
