This chromatographic technique was firstly introduced by J. Alpert in 2008 as an alternative method for separation of highly charged and hydrophilic analytes e.g. peptides, amino acids and nucleotides. Main idea behind ERLIC is based on selective decrease in retention due to repulsion between equally charged stationary phase and analyte. This repulsion effect can be mainly controlled by pH, adjusting presence or absence of charged molecules which result in the isocratic elution of highly retained analytes that would require a gradient in other chromatographic modes such as HILIC or RPLC.
