Le but de cet article est d'analyser un phénomene social particulier: la conversion d'un grand nombre d'intellectuels au catholicisme en France. De nombreux représentants de la vie culturelle francaise décident de se convertir eux-memes au catholicisme au tournant des XIXe et XXe siecles. Les oeuvres littéraires des artistes convertis appartiennent au renouveau catholique littéraire qui permet la naissance d'un nouveau genre littéraire, le "récit de conversion". Les artistes convertis issus de plusieurs cercles spirituels jouent un role important dans la littérature francaise. Ils essaient d'exprimer leurs transformations intérieures ainsi que de trouver leur identité spirituelle dans la foi catholique.

Cílem tohoto článku je analyzovat jeden společenský jev: konverzi velkého počtu intelektuálů ke katolicismu ve Francii. Mnozí představitelé francouzského kulturního života se rozhodli obrátit se ke katolicismu na přelomu 19. a 20. století. Literární díla obrácených umělců patří ke katolickému literárnímu obrození, které umožňuje vznik nového literárního žánru "románu o konverzi". Umělci-konvertité pocházejí z různých duchovních kruhů a hrají důležitou roli ve francouzské literatuře. Pokoušejí se vyjádřit své vnitřní proměny, stejně jako najít svou duchovní identitu v katolické víře.

The aim of this paper is to analyze a particular social phenomenon: the conversion of a large number of intellectuals to Catholicism in France. Many representatives of the French cultural life decide to convert themselves to Catholicism at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The literary works of the converted artists belong to the Catholic literary revival which allows the birth of a new literary genre, the "conversion narrative". The converted artists issued from several social and spiritual circles play an important role in the French literature. They try to express their inner transformations as well as find their spiritual identity in the Catholic faith.
