Fear and threats of death, separation from parents, forced displacement, sexual abuses, abduction, tortures, killings, landmine explosions, lack of basic services are only examples of some situations that children in areas of armed violence must usually face. Particularly in the Western world, the predominant approach to those children has consisted in trauma-based models that focus on healing pathologies and harms caused by past events. Nevertheless, recently the unexpected capacity of many children and adolescents to overcome different adversities, recover from extreme stress and continue with a productive life has drawn attention. This resilience is not an inherent or constant characteristics, it is a dynamic process that changes over time and in relation with various risk and protective factors.
