Abstract

V originále

We examined socioeconomic factors involved in participation in a painful ritual ordeal involving bodily mutilation and other hardships among Mauritian Tamil Hindus. We found differential effects of social and economic factors on the type of participation: low social status predicts more painful practices, while material wealth predicts more extravagant (but not more effortful) displays.
