Although the membership of intralingual translation in the triad with interlingual and intersemiotic translation, for which Jakobson (1959) is credited, has been firmly established as one of the indisputable facts in Translation Studies, intralingual translation as such remains a vastly underresearched area. The discipline has expanded its perspective but multimodal and multimedia translation, especially of the intersemiotic type, is getting most attention in the context of high-tech society, while intralingual translation keeps getting neglected as something of seemingly low complexity. This paper makes a move to towards using the untapped potential of studying intralingual translation with the ultimate aim of understanding what mediation in translation apart from crossing lexicogrammatical boundaries involves. The assumption is that insights from the research in practices of intralingual translation can be used to invigorate our understanding of mediation of communication in texts derived from other texts, beyond lexicogrammatical transcoding, reconceptualizing culture in terms of diaculture and audience design. The empirical work behind this paper focuses on material from English-English and Czech-Czech popularization of science as intralingual translating in order to open up the transitional perspective on working with translation shifts to include shifts resulting from other than language-bound considerations and propose an alternative shifts typology. This proposal, alongside other proposals from other areas of intralingual translation might, it is hoped, bring fresh vision to our viewing translation/s in general.
