Článok zhŕňa priebeh vojen so samnitskými kmeňmi, ktoré Rím viedol medzi druhou polovicou 4. a začiatkom 3. storočia pred n. l. Stručne predstavuje najdôležitejšie pramene a otázne body a poukazuje na význam týchto vojen pre ďalšiu rímsku expanziu. Na príklade vojny s Latinmi (340-338 pred n. l.) je pak demonštrované fungovanie rímskeho spojeneckého systému v Taliansku.
In English
The article sums up the history of the wars the Romans and the Samnite tribes fought with one another between the second half of the 4th and the beginning of the 3rd century B.C.E. It briefly introduces the most important sources and debated issues; it also stresses the importance of the aforementioned wars for further Roman expansion. The Roman-Latin war (340-338 B.C.E.) serves as an example of how the Roman confederacy on the Apennine Peninsula worked.
