Abstract

Tato kniha shrnuje známé údaje o Odorikovi a jeho cestě do Číny a zpět, včetně některých nedávných studií zejména od italských badatelů, na pozadí vývoje v Mongolské říši během 13. a 14. století a jeho styků s Evropou. Četné kopie Odorikova vyprávění (jak v originále, tak ve verzích ve francouzštině, italštině, němčině a dalších), které se dochovaly do naší doby, především ze 14. století, ukazují, jak cestopis rychle získal popularitu. Odorik značně rozšířil znalosti o jihovýchodní a východní Asii v Evropě. Nejcennější je jeho popis Číny, měst na jejím pobřeží a zejména hlavního města, kde strávil nejméně tři roky. Odorikova zpráva se stala cenným zdrojem pro nejaktuálnější kartografické dílo 14. století, Katalánský atlas (kolem 1375). Významnou částí je přehled rukopisů Odorikova cestopisu, jejich edic a prací o Odorikovi (téměř 900 položek).

Abstract (in English)

This book brings together the known data on Odoric and his journey to China and back, including some recent studies, especially by Italian scholars, against the background of developments in the Mongol Empire during the 13th and 14th centuries and his contacts with Europe. The numerous copies of Odoric's narrative (both in the original and in versions in French, Italian, German, and other languages) that have survived into our own time, especially from the 14th century, show how the travelogue quickly gained popularity. Odoric greatly expanded knowledge of Southeast and East Asia in Europe. Most valuable are his descriptions of China, its coastal cities, and especially its capital, where he spent at least three years. Odoric's account became a valuable source for the most up-to-date cartographic work of the 14th century, the Catalan Atlas (c. 1375). An important part is the survey of the manuscripts of Odoric's travelogue, their editions and works on Odoric (nearly 900 items).
