The talk will introduce the concept of narrative identity from the perspective of contemporary narrative and cultural psychology. In this approach the self is seen as a product of a story we are telling ourselves and others about our lives. These stories create the illusion that we are talking about a self with an autonomous existence when in fact we invent our selves in the act of narrating. Other psychologists argue against this “big story” theory; according to them we construct our self again and again in “small” stories told in everyday interactions with others: selves are relational, dialogical, and situated in local contexts. I will encourage a discussion about possible overlaps with Buddhist teachings of non-self.
