Abstract

V originále

The article proposes a reflection about the role of narrative images in the years around 400. Contrary to the current historiographical tradition, it proposes as the oldest document cycle that of the Ambrosian basilica in Milan. Known only thanks to the tituli this cycle was probably not only at the origin of the monumental narrative cycles, but also perhaps inspired the oldest preserved cycle, that of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. In that case, however, obvious alterations to the narrative serve a distinct political purpose. The narrative then becomes a pretext for talking about something else.
