In this text I challenge the notion that identity can be equated with collective identity, envisioned as based on a set of core attributes shared by all members of a homogenous collectivity. After outlining a sociologically relevant dynamics of identity construction, I turn to the issue of European identity, which is delineated in connection with the identity politics of modernity.
