Abstract

Politická situace a stupňující se společenské napětí v meziválečných letech v Rusku a Německu vyhnaly z domovů statisíce lidí a přiměly je hledat útočiště v cizině. Překračování hranic na cestě do bezpečí bylo však spojeno s mnoha obtížemi. Uprchlíky z Ruska zasáhla mimo jiné protiepidemická opatření, která měla zastavit smrtící tyfovou vlnu. Podobná opatření stála o několik let později v cestě Židům prchajícím z nacistického Německa. Útěk přes hranice a zkušenost emigrace se projevily i v životních osudech a dílech spisovatelek Irène Némirovsky a Hélène Iswolsky a historiků umění Nikodima Kondakova, André Grabara, Richarda Krautheimera a Ernsta Kitzingera. Přestože se museli potýkat s četnými těžkostmi, život v exilu jim poskytl i řadu nových možností, díky nimž významnou měrou obohatili společnost, která je přijala. Kniha pojednává o událostech sto let starých, avšak témata, kterým se věnuje – uzavírání hranic, sanitární opatření a emigrace –, jsou palčivě aktuální i dnes.

Abstract (in English)

The political situation and escalating social tensions in the interwar years in Russia and Germany drove hundreds of thousands of people from their homes and forced them to seek refuge abroad. However, crossing the borders on the way to safety involved many difficulties. Among other things, refugees from Russia were hit by anti-epidemic measures designed to stem the deadly typhus wave. Years later, similar measures stood in the way of Jews fleeing Nazi Germany. The flight across the border and the experience of emigration were also reflected in the lives and works of writers Irène Némirovsky and Hélène Iswolsky and art historians Nikodim Kondakov, André Grabar, Richard Krautheimer and Ernst Kitzinger. Although they had to face numerous difficulties, life in exile also provided them with many new opportunities that greatly enriched the society that welcomed them. The book deals with events that are a hundred years old, but the themes it addresses - border closures, sanitary measures and emigration - are still pressingly relevant today.
