N2 - Isoprinosine is a T-lymphocyte enhancing agent sometimes recommended for the treatment of patients with T-lymphocyte deficiency and clinical signs of immunodeficiency. We performed a double-blind trial of treatment of children aged 4-8 years with frequent respiratory tract infection and laboratory signs of T-lymphocyte deficiency - decreased absolute or relative numbers of E-rosette forming cells, CD3+ and CD4+ lymphocytes or increased numbers of CD8+ cells. Thirty two children that finished the study were given isoprinosine and 25 placebo. We could not show any clinical benefit of the administration of isoprinosine on the frequency or severity of respiratory tract infections compared to placebo. An increase in the number of E-rosette forming cells, CD4+ and CD3+ lymphocytes was observed after 6 weeks of isoprinosine administration, but similar, although not significant, changes were observed in the placebo treated group.
