Anotace

Die Beschwörungsformel adiuro te... lässt sich seit mehr als 1000 Jahren in lateinischen epigraphischen Quellen von der römischen Kaiserzeit bis zum Hochmittelalter beobachten. Die betreffenden Zeugnisse sind als sehr spezifische Artefaktgruppen charakterisiert, die jeweils einen sehr typischen epigraphischen Habitus definieren. In nordafrikanischen Fluchstafeln aus dem 3. und 4. Jahrhundert wurde adiuro te... vor allem zur Beeinflussung des Verlaufs von Wagenrennen verwendet. In spätantiken und frühchristlichen Grabinschriften, vor allem in Rom und Umgebung, wurde die Formel zum Schutz vor Umbettungen und Grabschändungen verwendet. Schiefertafeln mit Inschriften, die aus den heutigen spanischen Provinzen Salamanca und Ávila aus der Zeit der westgotischen Herrschaft bekannt sind, markieren den Übergang der Bedeutung von adiuro te... zwischen der beschwörenden Bitte an höhere Mächte um Hilfe und einer exorzistischen Verwendung zur Abwehr des Satans und seines Schadens. Diese Konnotation kennzeichnet die Redewendung im Mittelalter. Sie war in christlichen Amuletten üblich, die in Mitteldeutschland und Skandinavien ihre Träger vor dem Bösen schützen sollten. Der Artikel skizziert die Charakteristika der verschiedenen Inschriftengruppen und betrachtet so die Redewendung in ihrer longue durée.

The incantatory phrase adiuro te... can be observed for more than 1000 years in Latin epigraphic sources from the Roman Imperial period to the High Middle Ages. The testimonies in question are characterized as very specific artifact groups, each defining a very typical epigraphic habit. In North African curse tablets dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries, adiuro te… was used above all to influence the course of chariot races. In late antique early Christian funerary inscriptions, especially in Rome and the surrounding area, the formula was used to protect against reburial and desecration of graves. Slates with inscriptions, known from the present-day Spanish provinces of Salamanca and Ávila dating from the period of Visigoth rule, mark the transition of the meaning of adiuro te... between the invocative request of superior powers for help and an exorcistic use to ward off Satan and his harm. This connotation characterizes the phrase in the Middle Ages. It was common in Christian amulets, which in Middle Germany and Scandinavia were supposed to protect their wearers from evil. The article outlines the characteristics of the various groups of inscriptions and thus considers the phrase in its longue durée.
