A Qualitative Meta-Analysis of Therapy Outcomes as Perceived by Clients KW - psychotherapy outcome KW - client’s perspective KW - qualitative meta-analysis N2 - Psychotherapy outcome is given special emphasis in both research and practice. Yet, there is a lack of clarity about what the desired outcome of therapy should be. Traditionally, it is seen as a change in symptoms that is evaluated by various – usually quantitative – instruments administered before and after therapy. Nevertheless, there might be a difference between the traditional symptomatic approach to change and the specific experience of clients that cannot always be captured by commonly used measures. This presentation will be devoted to the findings of a qualitative meta-analysis of 108 studies that focused on client-identified outcomes of therapy. The meta-analysis of clients’ extensive accounts reveals more than 60 meta-categories of outcomes grouped into 13 clusters where only one represents a symptomatic change. ER -
