Il volume si propone di indagare la città di Ravenna tra Ottocento e inizio Novecento soffermandosi soprattutto sul modo in cui i monumenti tardoantichi ne hanno plasmato e costruito l'immagine, trasformandola da sito provinciale a vera e propria capitale della cultura italiana (e mondiale). Attraverso i suoi tre capitoli – dedicati rispettivamente agli studi storico-artistici sui monumenti tardoantichi ravennati, alle impressioni dei visitatori stranieri descritte nei loro diari di viaggio e, infine, alla produzione letteraria locale e alle campagne di restauro condotte nel periodo considerato – il libro offre al lettore un percorso coerente e progressivo, da una dimensione internazionale ad una nazionale e locale, nella speranza di tracciare il processo genetico che ha portato alla creazione del Mito di Ravenna nell'Ottocento. In questo senso, il tema viene affrontato attraverso un approccio innovativo in quanto la ricerca ha considerato le implicazioni del dialogo in continua evoluzione tra percezioni internazionali, nazionali e locali della città.

Devatenácté století bylo pro město Ravenna obdobím hlubokých změn, které v širším měřítku poznamenaly dvě zásadní politické události: Vídeňský kongres (1814–1815), po němž bylo město znovu přiděleno papežským státům, a politické sjednocení Itálie (1861). Ravenna, do té doby chudé periferní město, se totiž od počátku století snažila získat zpět významnou roli propagací své slavné pozdně antické minulosti, ztělesněné výjimečnými raně křesťanskými památkami města. Tato kniha si klade za cíl popsat tento proces, jeho důvody a důsledky a pochopit, jak přispěl k vytvoření nové identity Ravenny. Za tímto účelem kniha rekonstruuje dialog mezi obrazy města, které se objevily v západní umělecké historiografii, respektive v cestopisných zprávách, a propagací místních iniciativ, se zvláštním zaměřením na restaurátorské kampaně prováděné na ravennských pozdně antických památkách v tomto období. Nakonec tato kniha – skrze syntézu historie dějin umění a politického využití restaurátorských prací – ukazuje, jak byl v letech 1814–1914 vynalezen a utvářen „byzantský mýtus“ Ravenny.

The book aims to investigate the city of Ravenna between the 19th and the very beginning of the 20th century focusing especially on the way in which Late Antique monuments shaped and constructed the image of the city and transformed it from a provincial site into a true capital of Italian (and world) culture. Through its three chapters – dedicated respectively to the art-historical studies on Ravenna's late-antique monuments, the foreigners' travel accounts of the city, and finally, to the local literary production and the restoration campaigns carried out in the considered period – the book offers to the reader a coherent and progressive path, from an international and global dimension to a national and local one, in the hope of tracing the genetic process that led to the creation of the Myth of Ravenna in the nineteenth century. In this sense, the topic is addressed through an innovative approach as the research considered the implications of the ever-changing dialogue between national, local, and foreign perceptions of the city.
