In connection with artists and intellectuals of the 20th century, we sometimes encounter the term "inner exile", which refers to an escape from inhospitable reality into one's own microcosm. The composer Jan Novák (1921-1984) inhabited several of these microworlds until he decided to finally exchange them for a real political exile. He worked in relative isolation from society in the forests near the Brno dam, yet he loved society and was a member of several artistic and intellectual groups. The tradition of internal and external exiles was established in this country at the latest by Iohannes Amos Comenius, whose concept of humanism had - like Jan Novák's three centuries later - a transnational reach and an active pedagogical character. The paper will also touch upon parallels with Jan Novák's exiled teacher, Bohuslav Martinů.
