Between 2015‒2022, we collected 106 samples in 48 field ephemeral wetlands in South Moravia (Czechia). We found that the sites located on a wetland from the mid-19th century hosted more species-rich communities, including several regionally rare species (e.g. Daphnia atkinsoni, Wlassicsia pannonica), than the sites without such historical continuity. In addition, the zooplankton communities differed significantly between the spring and summer samples, likely due to recruitment of different species from the egg banks in response to different conditions, especially temperature. This was also reflected in the fact that the variability of communities at repeatedly sampled sites was similar to the variability between sites. We have documented that ephemeral wetlands on arable land are refugia for unique wetland communities and those with historical continuity should be prioritized for conservation.
