Anotace

V originále

This introduction to the workshop describes how the research project on the Brescia emerged from the convergence of several scholarly traditions—ranging from a more classical art historical perspective to approaches that emphasize historiography, materiality, and the technical history of construction. From the outset, the research team thus embraced a methodology that combines both art history and the history of artistic techniques which had yielded impressive results for the Boethius Diptych. There was no guarantee that such approach could be replicated on the Brescia casket. The interdisciplinary approach, however, quickly proved essential for moving beyond a research tradition shaped not only by the material history of the casket, but also by the ways in which it has been studied since the second half of the nineteenth century. For instance, from the very beginning of modern scholarship on the artifact, identifying the individual scenes and linking them to written texts took precedence—an approach that, until quite recently, largely eclipsed questions of the casket’s function and its material properties.
