Humility in Politics. Today, the combination of these words may sound like an oxymoron, but for the medieval Přemyslids, this idea was central to their coronation ritual. According to contemporary chroniclers, during the ceremony, the successors to the throne were shown the wooden shoes of Přemysl the Ploughman, the farmer who became the first Přemyslid prince. This legendary relic likely served, from the early 11th century onward, as a memento of the new rulers’ humble origins and a warning against the pride that newly acquired power could bring. Where do the roots of this ancient and now almost forgotten tradition lie? What do Vyšehrad and the Tower of London have in common? And what has become of the legendary shoes today? In the 55th episode of the podcast Středověk (jinak), archaeologist Jiří Macháček and art historian Ivan Foletti asked historian Lukáš Reitinger—an expert not only on shoes but, above all, on the early Czech kingdom—these very questions.
