The aim of our project was to identify and compare legislative aspects regarding what food and beverages can be sold in school facilities across selected European countries. We focused on four countries: Czechia, Slovakia, Malta, and Russia. Through a combination of legal document analysis and survey research, we examined national regulations and how they are reflected in students' real-life food choices. The research included student surveys conducted in each country, which provided insight into what students actually buy at school. Our findings reveal significant differences in the strictness and enforcement of school food regulations. While some countries impose simple restrictions (e.g., banning caffeinated drinks or sugary snacks), others have long lists of allowed and forbidden foods. Our survey showed that some kids still buy unhealthy food despite local legislation, but also that legislation forbidding energy drinks/caffeinated beverages seems to be effective, especially when kids can't buy these drinks outside school as well. The project highlights the importance of effective implementation of nutritional policies and the ongoing challenge of promoting healthier eating habits among students.
