Paper analyses and evaluates present state of lay judges participation in criminal proceedings in Czech Republic considering abovementioned reform. It also concludes on possible development of lay judges involvement in the future. To do so, paper presents legal foundations of the institute in Czech Republic. Then it focuses on specific powers of lay judges during main trial (judicial stage of criminal proceedings where lay judges participate) and provides list of most frequently mentioned advantages and disadvantages of lay element in criminal proceedings. Finaly, it presents 2025 reform, its evaluation and ideas on possible future development of the institute will be provided. Key thesis behind the paper is that involvement of laymen in judicial decision-making, even referred to as “cornerstone of democratic government”, has been in significant decline over the last years. The main question is whether we are heading towards end of lay participation in criminal proceedings in Czech Republic or if the current change may lead to its renaissance.
