This talk introduces a long-term research project on the development of Czech clitics carried out by a team of linguists in Brno. The first part summarizes the main findings so far: it outlines the inventory of historical Czech clitics, discusses how historical examples can be annotated, and looks in particular at how pronominal clitics competed for different word-order positions in Czech Bible translations from the 14th to the 21st century. The second part points to new directions for future work, focusing on word-order variation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and on the evolution of clitic clusters.
