The chapter focuses on parenting by incarcerated fathers in the Czech Republic and frames it within the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Using quantitative and qualitative data from the Parenting Behind Bars project, it describes the family background of convicted men, the number and age of their children, the extent of previous co-residence and the forms of contact during imprisonment. The analysis shows how insecure couple relationships, economic hardship, prison regimes and stigma restrict fathers’ opportunities to exercise parental authority and participate in their children’s everyday lives. Particular attention is paid to dilemmas around disclosing imprisonment to children and to the possibilities and limitations of different communication channels (visits, letters, phone calls, digital tools). The chapter concludes with implications for social work and criminal justice aimed at strengthening children’s right to maintain a relationship with their father and at reducing the risk of reoffending.

Kapitola se zaměřuje na rodičovství uvězněných otců v České republice v kontextu Úmluvy o právech dítěte. Na základě kvantitativních i kvalitativních dat z výzkumu Parenting Behind Bars popisuje rodinné zázemí odsouzených mužů, počet a věk jejich dětí, míru předchozího soužití a podobu kontaktu s dětmi během výkonu trestu. Ukazuje, jak kombinace nejistých partnerských vztahů, ekonomických problémů, vězeňského režimu a stigmatizace omezuje možnost otců naplňovat rodičovskou autoritu a podílet se na každodenním životě dětí. Pozornost je věnována dilematům kolem sdělování informace o uvěznění dítěti a možnostem komunikace (návštěvy, dopisy, telefonáty, digitální nástroje). Kapitola formuluje implikace pro sociální práci a trestní politiku, které mají posílit právo dítěte na kontakt s otcem a současně snižovat riziko recidivy.
