This lecture provides a concise introduction to the historical social network research, with an emphasis on how network concepts have been used to study social structure and interdependence in digital humanities. It outlines early descriptive approaches and the emergence of formal analytical tools, beginning with centrality measures as a way to quantify positions of actors within networks. The lecture then introduces methods for assessing network similarity and association, including the Mantel test and multiple regression quadratic assignment procedure. Building on these foundations, the lecture briefly presents model-based approaches for network structure and dynamics, including exponential random graph models, stochastic actor-oriented models, dynamic network actor models, and polyadic approaches such as relational hyperevent models . Throughout, the focus is on conceptual understanding, assumptions, and typical research questions.
