This book explores a variety of different discourses – including academic, media, political, business, fiction and advertising – adopting various perspectives to the analysis of text in context. Drawing on the functional approach to the study of language phenomena, the authors look beyond the surface of the text to reveal how language reflects and models social relations, expresses values and beliefs, and mediates the interaction between discourse participants. to the exploration of direct speech in crosswriters’ fiction for children and adults and political corruption scandals and related manifestations of political victimhood. The book includes twelve chapters organised into six parts, adopting perspectives and approaches from disciplines including pragmatics, discourse analysis, cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics, ethnography and artificial intelligence. It will be of interest to students and scholars in these and related fields.
