Anotace

V originále

The chapter introduces the main concepts around which the studies in the volume revolve—text, discourse, context and contextualisation—and relates them to the process of encoding and decoding the multilayered meanings of text by participants in communication. It then discusses a variety of possible approaches to text analysis, such as pragmatics, discourse analytic, cognitive and ethnographic, and considers their contribution to our current understanding of text and discourse. A brief overview of the chapters included in the book is provided, starting from studies adopting a pragmatics approach, followed by discourse and corpus analysis, cognitive and ethnographic perspectives, and concluding with the chapter on Artificial Intelligence. This overview highlights the contribution of each perspective and each method applied to the analysis and interpretation of texts representing different registers and genres, such as advertising, social media, academic texts, political, business and literary discourse. All chapters of the volume are unified by the functional approach to the study of language. Each, in its own way, reveals how language expresses, embodies and reflects cultural and social reality created by discourse participants. Finally, the chapter reflects on the growing tendency in current text analysis toward interdisciplinarity, the use of hybrid analytical frameworks, and the adoption of mixed-method approaches.
