The history of Czechoslovakia’s German population remains a complex and highly contested topic and today, nearly eighty years after the expulsion of most Sudeten Germans following World War II, scholarship continues to debate the ideological, political, and cultural tensions that shaped the German Czech borderlands. Yet although much research has focused on political radicalisation and economic issues, the material culture of these German communities—especially beyond traditional ethnographic studies—has received comparatively little attention. Overall, regional museums that have begun recognising the German contributions to local histories, such as the city museums in České Budějovice and Cheb, display ethnographic objects, but these are mainly concerned with traditional folk culture, which creates the impression of a static, conservative culture. Without wishing to eliminate the reactionary aspects that undoubtedly influenced Sudeten culture in the early decades of the twentieth century, and particularly after the founding of the First Czechoslovak Republic, my paper revisits Sudeten folk culture from a different angle. It argues that the cultural history of Sudeten Germans in interwar Czechoslovakia offers a compelling perspective on the intersections of tradition, modernity, and reactionary culture through the lens of a largely conservative minority that was firmly rooted locally yet operated on a transnational level.
