V originále
Connecting photographs from different stages of Kárász’s practice beyond the Bauhaus, this essay highlights ongoing tensions between social commitment, creative expression, and geographies that often remain hidden in the streamlined biographies of modernist artists, women especially. The essay thereby seeks to broaden our understanding of modernist histories of photographs to include not only questions of gender but also transnational mobility, and a focus on rural subject matter. An analysis of Kárász’s work from the 1930s to the 1960s shows that she consistently worked as a photographer in various professional and non-professional roles, which were often invisible, and that she adopted an approach to the medium early on that combined an experimental style with ethnographic practices that navigated between local and global modes of expression.
