This lecture argues that, rather than merely antiquarian or aesthetic pursuits, Edward Perry Warren's collecting practices constituted an overt effort to reclaim the Classical pedigree of homosexual love and to assert its value to Modern society. His acquisitions, particularly those for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, constituted a unified curatorial project, one that openly celebrated homoerotic desire in an era when such desire was largely suppressed or criminalized. This paper also examines Warren's legacy and its significance for what is today termed "queer museology," positing that his activities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries prefigure later attempts to integrate queer narratives into museums.
