The concept of legal consciousness poses two central questions for legal theory: What is its significance for legal theory, and can its study be pursued in a systematic and comprehensive manner? Alf Ross devoted considerable attention to this concept, and his insights continue to inform contemporary theoretical inquiry. A series of papers (2019-2022) have revisited Ross’s work to demonstrate its relevance for legal theory, culminating in a dedicated workshop at the 2022 IVR World Congress. From this initiative emerged a proposal for a collaborative research project aimed at addressing the two questions outlined above. This project sought to articulate a framework for the study of legal consciousness (based on Ross’s legacy) and to assess its potential relevance for legal theory. Its objective was to determine whether such a framework could support a systematic and comprehensive legal-theoretical approach to the concept. Seventeen legal theorists participated in this initiative, producing fourteen contributions that were published in 2025. Collectively, these contributions constitute the first sustained attempt to systematize knowledge of legal consciousness from the standpoint of legal theory. The forthcoming work, to be presented at this conference, outlines the next steps in the ongoing project on legal consciousness. First, it reports preliminary findings regarding the extent to which the proposed framework substantiates its relevance for legal theory, based on an analysis of the collected contributions. Second, it reflects on the practical experiences and challenges associated with undertaking a project of this type.
