N2 - The Brunovistulian Terrane was similarly as the Eastern Avalonia Terrane a part of the Panafrican (Cadomian) Gondwana margin. The lithological record of the Cambrian marine sediments may indicate the extension and rifting connected with the fragmentation of Gondwana while the faunistic record of Cambrian fauna shows close relation to Baltica (Belka et al. 1999). It is assumed that the Brunovistulian Terrane was amalgamated to the southeastern margin of Baltica and dextral translation is characteristic for its contact with northern Malopolska Terrane along the Krakow-Lubliniec Zone (Grygar, Vavro 1995). Thus the Brunovistulian Terrane was amalgamated to Baltica similarly as the Eastern Avalonia Terrane in the Lower Paleozoic, however, the Eastern Avalonian Terrane shows, contrary to the Brunovistulian Terrane, predominant sinistral translation. This differencies between the eastern and western part of the Middle European Variscides may have continued in the Upper Paleozoic. While the collision of the Armorican Terrane with Eastern Avalonian margin of Laurussia took place in the west, the complicated interaction of the Brunovistulian margin of Laurussia with both Armorican and Moldanubian terranes took place in the east. Summarizing we assume more important role of terranes in the structure of the Middle European Variscides analogous to the evolution of Appalachians.
