Derived adverbs are less frequent in English than in Czech. About half the Czech adverbs in a corpus have non-adverbial counterparts in English. This difference may be linked with the weakened position of the English verb. Specification is then linked to a nominal phrase in English and to the verbal phrase in Czech. All this is part of the nominal trends in English and may play a role in functional sentence perspective. Another reason why adverbs are more frequent in Czech is the existence of Czech verb+adverb counterparts to English verbs, eg pevne uchopit, ie firmly hold vs grip.
