Introduction. Flavonoids are a group of polyphenolic compounds widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom. They are characterized by the presence of two benzene rings that are linked by a 3-carbon bridge (to form chalcones) or by a pyrane or pyrone ring. Overall, flavonoids have so far been found to exhibit a wide spectrum of pharmacological properties, including antioxidative, antiallergic, antiinflammatory, antidiabetic, hepato- and gastro-protective, antiviral, and antineoplastic activities. Their anti-cancer effect has been also investigated. Objective. We suggested electroanalytical technique for determination of quercetin, quercitrin, rutin, diosmin and chrysin on the surface of a carbon paste electrode used for analysis of biological samples (e.g. apples). Materials and methods. Electrochemical measurements were performed with AUTOLAB Analyser connected to VA-Stand 663, using a standard cell with three electrodes. The working electrode was a carbon paste electrode. Phosphate buffer (0.1 M NaH2PO4 + 0.1 M Na2HPO4, pH 7.0) was used as a supporting electrolyte. Results. Electrochemical procedures represent advantageous possibility of miniaturisation and simultaneous analysis in vivo without disruption of living organism in comparison with the commonly methods used for determination of flavonoids. Here, we suggested the method utilising carbon paste electrode (CPE) for determination of quercetin, rutin, quercitrin, chrysin, and diosmin by square wave voltammetry (SWV) in the presence of phosphate buffer. Polishing using filtration paper prior to this purpose, which is much easier in comparison with glassy carbon electrode, renews the surface of the CPE. Moreover, the influence of glycoside part of the flavonoids on the resulted electrochemical signal was studied. The limits of detection of the flavonoids were about tens of nM, except diosmin (tens of ěM). Finally, we analysed biological samples such as apples. Conclusions. Suggesting of a simple, low cost and sensitive technique for determination of flavonoids in biological material is need due to their benefits to human and animal health. Here, we showed that electrochemical techniques are suitable for these purposes.
