Adults of Ceratopogonidae are minute to small nematocerous flies with a body length of 1 to 5 mm. The body colour is brownish to blackish, with some yellow markings. Head with large compound eyes and antenna, with a scape, pedicel and usually thirteen flagellomeres. Females usually with mouthparts adapted for piercing and sucking, the mouthparts weaker and much reduced in the male. The larvae are terrestrial or semi-aquatic and have a hypo- or prognathous head. Adults of Culicoides and of the subgenus Lasiohelea are haematophagous, but many of the other genera include insectivorous species. The family Ceratopogonidae contains 5476 species worldwide. Altogether 588 species are known to occur in Europe 192 of which have been recorded in the Czech Republic and Slovakia . Since the last version of the checklist the number of species in the Czech Republic has increased by 38, whilst 4 species have been added as new for Bohemia and 5 species for Moravia.

S ohladom na vyskum celade Ceratopogonidae v poslednych rokoch, 38 druhov bolo prvykrat zaznamenanych na uzemi Ceskej republiky, 5 druhov na historickom uzemi Moravy a 7 druhov na historickom uzemi Ciech. taxonomicky status 14 druhov bol opraveny vzhladom k recentnej nomenklature. Rody Nilobezzia a Neuroehelea a podrody Lepidohelea a Panhelea doplnaju poslednu verziu zoznamu druhov. Sucasny check-list zahrna 195 druhov celade Ceratopogonidae na uzemi CR a 133 druhov z uzemia Slovenska.
