The author of this essay discusses the problems of understanding and hermeneutics in contemporary Anglo-American philosophy examining the hermeneutical conceptions of Peter Winch, Charles Taylor, Paul de Man, Harold Bloom and Richard Rorty. The concluding section of it is devoted to the instigations of the William James s philosophy for the theoretical and methodological foundations of the depth hermeneutics in the works of C. G. Jung.
