After mines were flooded in 1998, ground water outflow is concentrated at a single mine adit. The hydraulic connection of mine shafts and drifts with a high permeability zone along the western boundary of the graben allows an inflow of surface water and ground water from alluvial sediments to the deeper rock environment. Based on results of discharge measurements, at least 50% of the ground water leaving the mining district in the main mine adit originates from direct infiltration from streams. ER -
