We tested CB1 cannabinoid receptor antagonist rimonabant (SR141716), which may also have antidepressant activity. The behavioural changes induced by olfactory bulbectomy in mice were inhibited by chronic treatment with rimonabant, which suggests an antidepressant-like drug effect in this model of depression. Rimonabant treatment was not able to compensate the anxiogenic effects induced by olfactory bulbectomy, neither it influenced behavioural activities in the sham-operated mice. The data support that the use of the OB mice in combination with the agonistic interactions model can be beneficial for identifying antidepressants compounds with anxiolytic/antidepressant actions.
