Abstract

V originále

Ambient air is contaminated by very complex mixture of contaminants and routine chemical analyses focus only on limited number of chosen indicator compounds. However, as it was shown previously, the non-detected compounds could produce significant biological effects. The air pollution has been associated mainly with lung, hearth diseases and genotoxic effects. Recent studies however indicate that the air pollutants could act also as endocrine disruptors in vitro as well as in vivo. In our study, we assessed genotoxicity, dioxin-like activity, anti/estrogenicity and anti/androgenicity of extracts from gas phase of air and six breathable size fractions of air particulate matter in vitro. The air samples have been collected at six localities that differed in type of contamination coming from industrial and combustions sources. We observed significant genotoxic, dioxin-like and antiestrogenic potency of the extracts from particulate air matter. This potency increased with decreasing diameter of the particles. Interestingly, extracts from gas phase of the air samples showed, besides similar effects produced by the particulate matter extracts, also significant antiandrogenicity. The results suggest that, besides genotoxicity, also other specific effects should be included in risk assessment to better describe overall toxic effects of the complex environmental mixtures of pollutants including interactions of their effects.
