V originále
In higher eukaryotes, most protein-encoding genes contain intronic sequences that need to be removed from the precursor messenger RNAs (pre-mRNAs). The intron splicing occurs in two main catalytic steps, in which introns are removed from primary transcripts in lariat forms. This process is performed by the spliceosome that is composed of five small nuclear ribonucleoprotein particles (snRNPs) and non-snRNP protein factors that bind to the pre-mRNA. The mechanism of intron removal has been described to a great detail, however, little is known about the intron degradation
