Para elogiar el producto ofrecido, el anunciante suele emplear sobre todo el presente, mientras que el futuro (o cualquier expresión de la posterioridad) está reservado para describir los beneficios de la adquisición y el uso del artículo anunciado. En comparación con el presente y el futuro, las formas del pasado son relativamente esporádicas en la publicidad, y su uso corresponde a funciones bien delimitadas: narrar la historia de la marca o del artículo, o bien mostrar un antes y un después del consumo del producto anunciado contrastando generalmente el pasado insatisfactorio del hipotético cliente sin el objeto o servicio en cuestión con un futuro feliz después de su compra.
