N2 - Developmental and physiological processes in plants are orchestrated by hormones and a cascade of regulatory genes. The BREVIPEDICELLUS (BP) gene encodes a homeodomain transcription factor belonging to the KNOX I (knotted1-like homeobox gene) family. BP predominantly regulates internode patterning and could be involved in other developmental processes including root growth. Hormonal regulation of BP expression and responsiveness of the bp mutant and overexpressor to hormonal treatment were investigated. Auxin, gibberellin, ethylene and cytokinin treatments did not result in ectopic BP expression, whereas abscisic acid (ABA) repressed BP in both shoots and roots dramatically. Any alteration in hormone sensitivity was not observed in the bp mutant. CaMV35S-BP seedlings had fewer and shorter lateral roots and altered sensitivity to cytokinins, ethylene and ABA. The main root growth of CaMV35S-BP was more sensitive to ethylene and cytokinin compared to wild type plants. On the contrary, transgenic plants were more resistant to the inhibitory effect of ABA on lateral root length.
