V originále
The certain present retreat of physical geography from the primary scientific scene is assessed in the paper. The authors discuss sets of present strong and weak features of the Czech physical geography (tradition, expansion to foreign countries, application of modern technologies, openness to outputs from other sciences, as well as low its low promotion potential and dominanting focus on analytic research). The selected advantages and threats of present Czech physical geography are also assessed, eg. the ability to make syntheses of knowledge, wide overview, wide spectrum of ideas, numbered national scientific community, and competition with other sciences and low level of geographic education. Some actual challenges influencing Czech physical geography are also respected, among others the study of extreme environmental features/phenomena, complex (holistic) landscape research, land use pattern optimizing, nature and landscape protection, social aspects of physical geography, everyday geography, school of useful geography, objectivity of its outputs. Special attention is paid to the regional environmental geography pursued in the Brno branch of the Institute of Geonics. The contribution is designed basically to open discussion about the future of the Czech physical geography.
