TY - JOUR ID - 951183 AU - Kamenická, Renata PY - 2011 TI - Teaching Translation Theory: The Challenges of Theory Framing PB - Tomas Bata University in Zlín CY - Zlín SN - 9788074540899 KW - translation theory KW - teaching KW - institutional translator training KW - prescriptive vs. descriptive approaches KW - metaskill KW - Douglas Robinson UR - http://conference.uaa.utb.cz/TheoriesAndPractice2010.pdf#page=127 N2 - This paper links the ongoing debate on the relevance of translation theory for translation practice to the experience from the first two years of the Master’s degree programme in translation at the Department of English and American Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. Opinions and attitudes concerning the usefulness of translation theory expressed by students who had been exposed to the translation theory package offered in the programme are drawn on and analyzed in terms of prevailing tendencies. The importance of the translational metaskill outlined by Douglas Robinson (1997) is emphasized and linked to translation theory teaching. Overall, the paper attempts to answer the question as to how student expectations can be reconciled with what translation theory can offer students. ER -
