The lecture presented the results of a comparative study of the use of reporting verbs by Czech and German students in their diploma thesis. The aim of the analysis was to determine the proportion of verbs according to the denotative categories as determined by Hyland (1999)and the evaluative potential of reporting verbs. The research has shown that the most frequent category of reporting verbs is discourse act verbs and the least frequent cognition act verbs, both in Czech and German theses. As for the evaluative potential, both German and Czech students display a tendency to use non-factive verbs.
