Jane Gardam's Old Filth (2004) is examined as her yet another variation on the genre of the bildunsroman, combining memories of growing up with the reality of aging. Fragmented, equivocal and disturbing, it is in tune with the postmodern shift in the pattern of thought and structures, encapsulating the life of the protagonist and the era.
