TY - CONF ID - 991122 AU - Kučerová, Silvie - Šimáně, Michal PY - 2012 TI - Birth and death of Czech elementary schools during the 20th century in border region – The common features of two stages of evolutional continuum KW - Czech elementary schools KW - 20th century KW - border region KW - history N2 - During the twentieth century Europe witnessed several significant changes of geopolitical situation and particularly the borderland areas, interfacial area of two cultures, concern these events with a special intense. The example of such "geopolitically" affected area has been the Czech-German borderland, where mass population movements occured during the twentieth century. The geopolitical changes impressed into everyday life of residents and without the exception to the schools organization. The paper aims at analysis of events and processes connected with establishing of new elementary schools for Czech minority in North-Bohemian region Ústí nad Labem. The example of Ústí nad Labem region is framed into wider historical-geographical context and in the same way, with regard to works by other authors, some of the conclusions can be applied on evolutional trends in regions with similar characteristics. In the paper we try to compare the factors, influencing the establishment and the end of elementary schools in two stages of evolutional continuum, to look for especially their common features as well as conditionalities of border location. Our research is framed by statistical analysis of spatial distribution of Czech elementary schools and further it is based on the study of archival sources about regional schools and interviews with witnesses of local school closure. The paper represents a partial study from two wider projects focused on historical and spatial aspects of development of elementary schools in Czechia. ER -
