Domain Name System (DNS) is one of the most important protocols on the Internet. Because of its widespread use, it is often being misused by threat actors in various cybersecurity incidents. This work aims to analyze the current status of DNS from the cybersecurity standpoint. The analysis will focus on the freely available datasets from scans.io data repository. The work will explain the available datasets and present basic data analysis of the domain names dataset. It will also provide insight into doing subdomain enumeration (used in the reconnaissance phase of the kill chain) and subdomain takeovers using only the data in the dataset. These techniques can help blue and red teams to understand better the security threats related to DNS.
